Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Cervicogenic Headache

Cervicogenic HeadacheThe source of the pain is rooted in the soft tissues or cervical spine of the neck, but the sensation of pain is transmitted to the head. It is also termed as secondary headache since it is caused by another physical tissue or illness. Primary headaches are due to things like brain tumours and infections, which thankfully are rare.

Causes of a Cervicogenic Headache

Cervicogenic headaches are thought to occur because of the way that pain signals from the neck mix with the ones from the head in an area called the trigeminocervical nucleus.  This is located in the top of the spinal cord.  When pain signals from the neck joints and muscles come into the area, the brain misunderstands the signals and thinks they are coming from the head.

The pain signals typically originate from the upper neck which includes the three upper neck joints, C2/3 disc, spinal cord coverings, and the neck muscles.  It can however be due to tightness in the low neck and shoulder muscles and joints as well. Dr. Rocchi ( chiropractor ) explains that a dysfunction in any of these areas can essentially cause a neck headache. For example- A hair stylist or a carpenter can experience this type of headache because of the way they have to position their heads when they work.

A cervicogenic headache can also happen from a fall, whiplash, sports injury, arthritis or from a fracture in your upper spine or neck.

Symptoms of a Cervicogenic Headache

Symptoms may include:

  1. Non-throbbing, but a steady pain.
  2. Pain on one side of the face or head.
  3. Pain experienced in the head with neck movements or sustained postures.
  4. A stiff neck.
  5. Pain that remains at one point, like the front, back or side of your head or your eye.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A correct and quick diagnosis is critical since there are many types of headaches and some need immediate attention. At Spine Scan Dr Rocchi ( chiropractor ) uses a computerised tool called Pulstar. This instrument can provide relief for headaches. This tool helps in determining the degree of fixation or motion of your spine and delivers an optimum measure of force to any dysfunctional joints to try and restore normal movement and hopefully relieve pain.

Apart from this, Dr. Rocchi( chiropractor ) also explains that Trigenics main objective is to attempt to provide relief from pain.
