A Race Of Three Legs – Boosting Your Triathlon Performance

TriathlonA triathlon is a test of speed, stamina, endurance – an event which tests even the fittest of athletes. Swimming, cycling, running, these are all complex and difficult disciplines in their own right, but when put together to form an event such as this, the competitor certainly needs to be at the top of their game.

Because of the difficult and demanding nature of this event, it’s a common fact that injuries do occur from time to time, and are often due to overuse. Repetitive motions and training can put high amounts of stress on the tendons, muscles and tissues which form the protective sheath around the bones and joints, which puts the area at a high risk of tears and other types of injury; when these aren’t addressed quickly and properly, further injury occurs, which can, in the worst case scenarios, put a definite end to an athlete’s career.

A training analysis is an important step in helping to reduce the risk of injury, because this gives an athlete important information on where they may be going wrong, including how to fix any potential issues which could cause injury in the future. On top of this, using the correct equipment, which is fit uniquely to the person concerned, can do a lot to help prevent problems.

Aside from injury prevention and treatment, we also help advise athletes on how they can increase their race time, putting them from second to first place.  One of the services we provide is functional movement screenings.  They can help detect problems with your stroke or stride that may be setting you up for injury or slowing you down.

In addition, the Trigenics approach can be very effective at correcting faulty muscle movement patterns, even if they are very ingrained.

Preparation

The difference between triathlons and other sporting events is that the fittest person in the race doesn’t always end up being the winner, because it’s often the preparation that goes into the event which puts someone a little further in front. If you can combine fitness with preparation, you’re onto a winner.  Triathlon Australia has some good videos on training preparation.

Here’s a few tips on how you can increase your triathlon success rate.

  • Do your research. Check out the race route, run it first, ask anyone else who has done it; basically get as much information as you can.
  • Push yourself during training, but not too much. Set yourself goals, but always listen to your body.
  • Make sure you rest between training sessions, getting plenty of sleep, and checking your nutrition intake – plenty of carbs, protein, and nutrient-rich foods are what you need to be aiming for.
  • Ensure that injuries are checked out and treated quickly. Sports massage is also a good way to help the body recover between intense training sessions.
  • Always warm up before training or the triathlon itself, and always warm down.
  • Plan ahead in terms of your nutrition before race day, and don’t push yourself too far in terms of training, always keep a little back at this stage.
  • Don’t miss the small things – practise getting out your wetsuit, into your helmet, and shoes, these are all little things which can shave off a little time.
