Knee Pain

Knee Injury TreatmentWhen you think about the important parts of your body, the bits of your anatomy that allow you to move and get around, do you give much thought to your knees?

Your knees bear most of your weight throughout your life, and are subject to more wear and tear than perhaps any other part of your body. You could argue that your knees are one of the most underrated parts of your anatomy, and when you get an injury to one of them, you will certainly know about it! You can get relief from seeing a chiropractor – Perth residents are discovering this!

Whether you are a professional athlete, or you simply find yourself suffering from a freak injury, perhaps a sharp turn that leaves you with a sprain for example, a knee injury is painful, upsetting, and in the worst cases, can cause long-term problems.

Luckily, not all knee injuries have this rather bleak outlook, and if you can seek prompt treatment and advice, there’s no reason why you can’t head back onto the pain-free road you were on before. Here at Spinescan, we appreciate the distressing nature of a knee injury, and we see and treat countless individuals with this condition, helping them to recover completely, minimising the risk of a long-term, chronic problem.

A Common Knee Injury

A common knee injury is a meniscus tear. This may sound very complicated, but basically, the meniscus is the cushion which protects your knee joint, absorbing all the pressure and shock as you move. You can easily suffer a tear in this part of your knee, simply by stretching in an awkward manner, or twisting perhaps. Wear and tear also happens in this part of the knee, and over time this can lead to a worsening of the problem, meaning it is important to seek help as soon as possible, to prevent a serious issue in the future.

The good news is that a meniscus tear doesn’t tend to need surgery, and can be treated and cured with conservative measures. Chiropractic treatment is very effective in the treatment of a meniscus tear, through careful stretching exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee, taking the pressure off the injury, and allowing it to heal. Once healing is underway, gentle rehabilitation of the knee begins, at a very slow pace, to allow full strength and range of motion to be obtained. Only a qualified individual can advise you on the pace of treatment and rehabilitation, so it is important to seek help in this regard.

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to suffer a knee injury such as this, but if you are, then there are obvious concerns as to whether this will cut short or seriously damage a budding career. Cyclists in particular are most at risk of meniscus tear injuries, due to the repetitive movements and strain which is put on the knee joint during cycling. Despite this, we mentioned that a simple slip when walking down the street can do the same thing, so nobody is totally out of the woods when it comes to the potential for this kind of injury.
